Effect of Acidifiers in Poultry

Feed acidulants are acids contained in feed to inhibit the growth of pathogenic gut microbes by lowering the pH of the feed, gut and microbial cytoplasm. This suppression reduces the microflora that competes for host nutrients and results in better growth and performance of the chicken. Some of them also act as antifungal agents. They add up to 0.25% of the diet. Most acids have an effect and that effect remains unless the acid is volatilized. Antibacterial feed acidulants are acids included in feed to inhibit the growth of pathogenic gut microbes by lowering the pH of the feed, intestine and microbial cytoplasm. This suppression reduces the microflora that competes for host nutrients and results in better growth and performance of the chicken. Some of them also act as antifungal agents. They add up to 0.25% of the diet. Most acids have an effect and that effect remains unless the acid is volatilized. The antibacterial effects of organic acid ions that control bacterial populations in the upper intestinal tract result in beneficial effects.
